The Early Cat
Ink · observation · Victorian roots
Before memes, there were cats. Louis Wain turned them into characters, performers and dreamers. WAIN carries that spirit into a new digital world — with original art, history, community and Solana culture.
Independent community tribute. Not affiliated with the Louis Wain Foundation, museums, estate or rights holders unless explicitly stated.
Louis Wain became known for anthropomorphic cats — animals that behaved, dressed and socialized like people.
Born in London in 1860, Wain began his career as an illustrator and animal artist. His cat drawings became his signature, helping turn the domestic cat into a beloved cultural subject in Victorian and Edwardian Britain.
His cat Peter was especially important in his story. Wain's work evolved from observational drawings into imaginative scenes filled with personality, humor and social satire.
This site separates historical information about Wain from our newly created WAIN CAT character and community brand.
WAIN's visual language is built as an evolution: vintage linework first, then humanized cats, color, abstraction and finally a digital interpretation.
Ink, paper, naturalistic animals and Victorian illustration.
Grown-up cats in clothes, society scenes and everyday human rituals.
Patterns, flowers, bold color and increasingly imaginative compositions.
Geometric and experimental visual language associated with his later work.
An original character for a new generation of art and internet culture.
A visual chapter system for the future archive. Replace each placeholder with properly licensed or public-domain material as the project is researched.
